It might not have been completed for years if it weren’t for the self-taught, pragmatic engineer Capt. J. W. Wilson was a hard-working, uncompromisingly honest man.
Although there were some escapees on Balsam Mountain and a few wrecks in the river and Cowee Tunnel in the early 1900s, there were not many fatalities.
Accidents decreased as railroad improvements were installed. The construction of the enormous Fontana Dam in the early 1940s marked the peak of the Murphy Branch’s use during the war.
On a spur line constructed from Bushnell to Fontana, thousands of carloads of cement, machinery, and other supplies arrived at the construction site via rail.
The Murphy Branch, which was owned by the expansive Southern Railway System at the time, saw a decrease in passenger traffic as the automobile gained widespread use.
On July 16th, 1948, Southern closed the Murphy Branch, which had served as a gateway to the outside world for 64 years, to all passenger traffic.
The State of North Carolina bought the Dillsboro to Murphy rails to prevent their destruction when Norfolk Southern terminated the Andrews to Murphy segment of the Murphy Branch in 1985 due to a decline in freight traffic.
